Experienced nature photographer Pertti Turunen leads the ptarmiganson fells day excursion, which showcases the birds as well as the bare, rugged mountain terrain they inhabit. The excursion leaves Ivalo at around 9.00 am as we head south towards Finland’s biggest national park. On the outskirts of the park, the excursion proceeds on snowshoes. This activity requires a sufficient level of fitness due to winter conditions. Pertti Turunen has photographed ptarmigans in the region for decades and so is knowledgeable about the birds’ habits and locations.
The willow ptarmigan is a smaller ptarmigan species which nonetheless resembles its bigger cousin in appearance and size. The willow ptarmigan breeds on fells, in open rocky terrain.
