Longer Tour: Arctic puffins on snow, bird photography tour to Hornøya in Norway 26 – 29 March, 2020 - 4 Days

Join our guide and take photos of Arctic seabirds in winter in Vardø, situated in the northeastern corner of Varanger peninsula. One of the most famous bird islands in northern Norway is  Hornøya, in front of the city of Vardø, www.hornoya.com.  The island is well-known for large colonies of kittiwakes, Arctic puffins, European shags and murres. Thousands and thousands of love birds breed on the island. White-tailed eagles are also commonly seen on Hornøya. The end of March is an excellent time for taking photos of Arctic puffins from a distance of few metres. These fearless playful birds inhabit the island of Hornøya in March, together with other bird species.  At the time, because breeding has not begun yet, Arctic puffins can easily be photographed without needing super tele lens. There is normally snow on the island at the end of March, so taking pictures of puffins on snow is possible. At the end of March, the nights are still dark enough to allow tour to possibly conclude with some spectacular Northern Lights pictures.

The point of departure and return of the tour is Ivalo village. The group size 4 – 6 people. The guide is Jouni Männistö from Arctic Camera.  Arctic Camera reserves the right to make changes. Accommodation will be at Vardø Apartments.  Guiding languages are English and Finnish.

Varanger is situated in the furthest northeastern part of Norway. The North Atlantic drift carries the warm ocean water current of the Gulf Stream, which just reaches Varanger, resulting in the high biological productivity of the coasts here. In the spring wintering and breeding birds meet in Varanger, as the first migrants return from their wintering grounds.
